Minority Leader Junet Mohamed downplays his public spat with SG Edwin Sifuna, terming it healthy democratic debate as he assures supporters of ODM’s unshakable unity.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not burning; it is simply having a "vigorous conversation." That is the message from Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, who has moved to quell feverish speculation about a catastrophic rift within the opposition behemoth.
Junet’s intervention comes days after a high-voltage exchange with Secretary General Edwin Sifuna played out on national television. Critics called it the beginning of the end; Junet calls it democracy. The Suna East MP insists that differing views on party strategy do not equate to a factional war, even as the 2027 realignment battle heats up.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s JK Live, Junet sought to de-escalate the tension that has gripped the party’s base. "It is a divergence of opinion," he stated, dismissing the narrative of a personal vendetta against the Nairobi Senator. "He believes that way, I believe this way. Nothing personal."
This internal wrestle for the soul of ODM is critical. As the dominant partner in the Azimio coalition, any tremor in ODM registers as an earthquake in Kenyan politics. With Ruth Odinga also warning against rushed coalition talks, it is clear the party is undergoing a painful, necessary metamorphosis.
For the rank-and-file supporter, Junet’s reassurance is a soothing balm, but the cracks are visible. The question remains: can ODM transition from the monolithic command of the past to a collegiate future without tearing itself apart? Junet says yes. History is less certain.
