Mama Ida Odinga defends her decision to accept President Ruto’s UNEP appointment, terming it a national honour amidst deepening rifts in the ODM party.

In a move that has redrawn the political map of Kenya, Mama Ida Odinga has formally accepted President William Ruto’s nomination as the country’s Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Speaking for the first time since the shock announcement, the widow of the late opposition titan Raila Odinga termed the appointment "a great honour" and a call to serve, not a political betrayal.
The nomination comes just three months after the passing of Raila Odinga, a timing that critics have called "Machiavellian" but supporters see as a unifying gesture. By bringing the matriarch of the Odinga dynasty into the government fold, President Ruto has played a card that leaves the fractured ODM party in a tailspin.
Addressing congregants at a PEFA Church in Roysambu this Sunday, Ida stood tall, her voice steady. "I walk with my head high," she declared, addressing the whispers of betrayal from hardliners in her husband's party. "Every time I open the newspaper, it is 'Ida this, Ida that'. But I do not fear. This is about Kenya, not politics. The environment does not know ODM or UDA."
Her acceptance is being viewed as the final nail in the coffin of the radical opposition. With the "Mother of the Party" now a state officer, the moral authority of those calling for street protests is significantly diminished.
For Ida, this is a chance to step out of the giant shadow of her late husband and carve her own legacy on the global stage. "He prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies," she quoted from the Psalms, a subtle jab at those within ODM who have tried to sideline her since Raila's death.
President Ruto’s "chess game" is effectively checkmate. He has honoured the memory of his rival while simultaneously decapitating the opposition. As Ida Odinga prepares to present her credentials, the era of combative opposition politics in Kenya seems to be drawing to a quiet, diplomatic close.
