Rigathi Gachagua claims to have video evidence of police involvement in the Othaya church attack and gives the state a 16-day ultimatum, intensifying his war with the government.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dropped a bombshell, claiming to possess irrefutable video evidence linking state security agents to the violent disruption of a church service in Othaya. Speaking in Murang’a, a defiant Gachagua vowed to release the footage within 16 days if the perpetrators are not brought to book.
The incident at ACK Witima Parish on January 25 saw teargas lobbed into the sanctuary and live bullets fired, an act Gachagua now explicitly terms an "assassination attempt." Leading the newly formed "United Opposition" brigade, the former DP is turning the church attack into a potent political weapon, framing it as proof of a regime that has lost its moral compass and fear of God.
Gachagua did not hold back. "We have the clips. We know who sent them. There was a police shooter involved," he told a hushed crowd at the burial of Jane Wanjiku Kamau in Kigumo. His rhetoric was calculated to inflame the emotions of the Mt. Kenya electorate, a region where the sanctity of the church is paramount.
Backed by co-principals Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa (reading a speech for Uhuru Kenyatta), Gachagua painted a picture of a government at war with its own people. The leaders heckled Trade CS Lee Kinyanjui off the stage, forcing him to flee the funeral—a symbolic rejection of the President’s emissaries in the region.
"They thought teargas would silence us," Karua added, rallying the mourners. "Instead, it has opened our eyes." The burial turned into a political rally, confirming that the mountain region has become a hostile operating environment for the Kenya Kwanza administration.
As the clock ticks on Gachagua’s ultimatum, the country waits to see if the "video evidence" is a smoking gun or a political bluff. Either way, the battle for the soul of Mt. Kenya has entered a volatile new phase, with the pulpit as the battlefield.
