The former Deputy President offers a strategic compromise to cement a 2027 'United Opposition,' urging Raila’s party to leverage its history with the Wiper leader if his own presence is a hurdle.

NAIROBI — In a calculated move to consolidate a fractured opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has extended a unique olive branch to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Speaking at a packed service at Christ Dominion Ministries in Kasarani on Sunday, Gachagua admitted his own brand of politics might be abrasive to some in the Orange party, but implored them not to let personality clashes derail the mission to unseat President William Ruto.
“We are asking ODM to join us. Even if you do not want to sit with me, sit with Kalonzo,” Gachagua declared, referring to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. “You have been together with him for 15 years. Do not get lost.”
The statement marks a significant pivot for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, who is currently crafting a “United Opposition” alliance. By positioning Musyoka as the acceptable bridge for ODM, Gachagua is effectively playing the role of a pragmatic kingmaker, prioritizing coalition math over personal ego.
Gachagua’s overture comes amidst what he describes as desperate attempts by the Kenya Kwanza administration to dismantle the opposition. He alleged that government operatives have been “trailing” Musyoka, attempting to lure him into a deal with President Ruto—a claim the government has not officially addressed.
“They have been inviting him to join them, but I want to assure you that my cousin here cannot betray the people of Kenya,” Gachagua told the congregation, emphasizing a bond that he claims transcends politics. “The relationship between Kalonzo and I is not just about the presidency; it is family. Blood is thicker than water.”
This “family” narrative is designed to reassure opposition supporters in both Mt. Kenya and Ukambani that the emerging alliance is stable, despite the historical rivalry between the two regions’ political elites.
Tensions had recently flared within the nascent coalition over the distribution of elective seats in Nairobi, with reports suggesting Gachagua’s DCP wanted to sweep the Governor, Senator, and Woman Representative positions. On Sunday, however, Gachagua walked back those ambitions, offering a formula based on ground strength rather than entitlement.
“In Nairobi, Wiper has had a big name and has always helped ODM,” he noted. “Where Wiper is strong, DCP will support Wiper. Where DCP is strong, we will request Wiper to support DCP.”
This clarification is crucial for the capital’s voters, who often bear the brunt of chaotic coalition zoning. A unified ticket could significantly alter the city's power dynamics, which have historically been a tug-of-war between the ruling coalition and ODM.
Beyond the coalition building, Gachagua pivoted to the bread-and-butter issues affecting the wananchi, launching a scathing attack on the government’s privatization drive. He specifically targeted the alleged sale of Safaricom shares, claiming the assets were being undervalued to the detriment of the taxpayer.
While the government has defended asset sales as a necessary measure to manage public debt, Gachagua’s figures—if accurate—paint a grim picture of national wealth erosion that resonates with Kenyans already struggling with the high cost of living.
As the service concluded, the message was clear: the road to 2027 will be paved with compromises. For Gachagua, the immediate goal is not just leadership, but survival against a well-oiled ruling machine. “We will sit as a family,” he promised. “And all our decisions going forward will be family decisions.”
