Kenya Railways launches a new "last-mile" bus service connecting train stations to key Nairobi hubs, aiming to solve the city’s traffic nightmare.

For decades, the Nairobi commuter experience has been defined by chaos, fumes, and lost hours. Now, Kenya Railways (KR) claims to have the antidote. The state corporation has rolled out the Nairobi Commuter Rail Bus Service, a "last-mile" connectivity plan designed to seamlessly link train stations to the city’s commercial heartbeats.
The ambitious project targets the notorious "final kilometer"—the gap between the train station and the office that often forces commuters back into matatus or private cars. By deploying a dedicated fleet of buses at key nodes like Westlands, Upper Hill, and Yaya Centre, KR aims to offer a true door-to-door alternative to the gridlock.
In a bold statement, Kenya Railways declared, "Nairobi traffic? Weve got a smoother plan." The integrated network now connects the Central Railway Station to major hubs, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Embakasi.
Managing Director Philip Mainga has framed the initiative as a modernization of urban transport. "We are completing the puzzle," insiders say. "A train ride is useless if you get stuck for an hour trying to leave the station. These buses bridge that gap."
The move is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR). With the city’s population swelling, road expansion has reached a point of diminishing returns.
While the plan looks good on paper, its success will depend on reliability. Nairobians are tired of pilot projects that fizzle out. If Kenya Railways can maintain a strict schedule and ensure safety, this could be the turning point for the capital’s mobility. If not, it will be just another bus in the jam. For now, the "smoother plan" is on the road, and the city is watching.
