NAIROBI, Kenya – Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has appealed to Kenyans for calm following the controversial death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang, who died under mysterious circumstances while being held in police custody at Nairobi's Central Police Station. The incident has sparked a national outcry, with several police officers linked to the case having been interdicted pending a full investigation.
Government Response and Public Outcry
Addressing the matter on Monday, June 9, CS Wandayi urged the public, and particularly the family and friends of Mr. Ojwang, to remain calm and allow investigative bodies to conduct their work. “I appeal for calm and understanding from all Kenyans as we await the findings of the investigation,” he stated. The Cabinet Secretary also commended the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, for his swift action in suspending the officers who were on duty at the time of the incident, including the OCS, the duty officer, and the cell sentry. “This action by the IG is commendable. It’s a strong signal that the government is keen on accountability,” Wandayi added. The National Police Service (NPS) stated the suspension was to facilitate a transparent probe by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Details of the Incident
Mr. Ojwang was reportedly arrested on June 7 in Homa Bay County before being transported to Nairobi. The official police report claims he sustained fatal head injuries after allegedly hitting a wall in his cell. This explanation has been widely questioned on social media, reigniting a national debate on police brutality and accountability in Kenya. Civil society groups and political leaders are now demanding a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure justice for Albert Ojwang.
