Agriculture CS Munya Launches New Drought-Resistant Maize Variety to Boost Food Security

Eldoret, Kenya – Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya officially introduced a new, high-yielding maize seed variety that has been specifically developed to withstand drought conditions. The unveiling took place at a regional farmers’ fair and is anticipated to significantly boost crop yields, particularly in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) which are frequently affected by insufficient rainfall.

Supporting Vulnerable Communities

The government announced plans to distribute these improved seeds at subsidized rates to vulnerable farming communities across the country. CS Munya stated that this innovation is a critical part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance national food security, especially in the face of escalating climate change impacts. He strongly encouraged farmers to adopt modern, climate-smart farming techniques and assured them of continued research support and extension services from the Ministry of Agriculture to maximize their productivity and resilience.
