Tsavo East National Park

Covering more than 13,700 square kilometers, Tsavo East National Park is Kenya’s largest and one of Africa’s most iconic wilderness landscapes. This immense semi-arid expanse of golden savanna, acacia scrub, and dramatic geological formations stretches as far as the eye can see, forming the eastern half of the legendary Tsavo Conservation Area. When combined with its neighbor, Tsavo West National Park, the ecosystem spans over 22,000 square kilometers, creating one of the world’s largest protected wildlife areas. Tsavo East is celebrated for its red-dust-coated elephants, often seen in massive herds, their copper-colored hides gleaming under the African sun after wallowing in the park’s ochre soils. The park also hosts the Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow, a geological marvel stretching 300 kilometers across the northern plains. Along the Galana River, visitors encounter the stunning Lugard Falls, where roaring waters cascade over sculpted rock, forming a dramatic contrast to the surrounding dry savanna. Despite its vastness, Tsavo East teems with life. Its open plains support large elephant herds, towering giraffes, lion prides, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, and diverse antelope species including oryx and lesser kudu. Over 500 bird species, from ostriches and hornbills to raptors circling the thermals, make it a birder’s paradise. The park’s sparse vegetation allows for breathtaking game viewing, where wildlife silhouettes emerge against fiery sunsets and sweeping horizons.
