Managed by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), the Giraffe Centre is one of Nairobi’s most celebrated conservation and education destinations. Established in 1979, the centre was created in response to the rapid decline of the Rothschild’s giraffe, one of Africa’s most endangered giraffe subspecies. Located in Lang’ata, just outside Nairobi’s city center, the Giraffe Centre has played a pivotal role in raising awareness about wildlife conservation in Kenya. The primary mission of the Giraffe Centre is the protection and breeding of the Rothschild’s giraffe, whose population had dwindled to critically low numbers by the late 20th century. Through carefully managed breeding programs and habitat protection initiatives, the centre has contributed significantly to the reintroduction of giraffes into protected areas across Kenya. Its conservation model has since become a reference point for wildlife preservation efforts in the region. A highlight of any visit is the opportunity to interact closely with the giraffes from a raised wooden platform. Visitors can hand-feed the giraffes using specially prepared pellets, offering a rare and memorable encounter with these gentle giants. Educational talks and interpretive displays further enrich the experience, helping visitors understand the ecological importance of giraffes and the challenges facing wildlife conservation today. Beyond the giraffe enclosure, the Giraffe Centre features a tranquil nature sanctuary with forest trails that showcase indigenous plants, birds, and small mammals. This green refuge provides a peaceful contrast to the surrounding urban environment and reinforces the centre’s commitment to environmental education. By combining conservation, learning, and responsible tourism, the Giraffe Centre continues to inspire both local and international visitors to protect Kenya’s natural heritage.
