Aberdare National Park

Aberdare National Park, set within the Aberdare Mountain Range in central Kenya, is a high-altitude sanctuary defined by dramatic landscapes and remarkable biodiversity. Located east of the East African Rift Valley, the park stretches across mountain peaks rising to 4,000 meters, rugged ridges, and deep V-shaped valleys carved by streams, rivers, and waterfalls, creating a mosaic of habitats ranging from alpine moorlands to dense rainforests. At higher elevations, open moorlands give way to bamboo thickets and luxuriant rainforests teeming with life. The park’s cool, misty climate and varied terrain nurture wildlife species rarely seen in Kenya’s lower savanna parks. Visitors may encounter elephants moving silently through the forests, giant forest hogs grazing in clearings, and elusive leopards or lions adapting to the montane environment. Other residents include buffalo herds, the endangered East African wild dog, eland, bushbuck, duiker, and over 250 bird species such as the endangered Aberdare cisticola and rare raptors. The park’s rivers and waterfalls—Karuru Falls being the tallest at 273 meters—add scenic grandeur, while crystal-clear mountain streams provide habitat for trout fishing. With its combination of high-altitude ecosystems, large mammals, and pristine montane forests, Aberdare National Park offers a completely different safari experience from Kenya’s lowland parks, attracting hikers, birdwatchers, and wildlife enthusiasts seeking solitude and natural beauty.
