Governor of Kisumu County
Professor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o is serving his second term as the Governor of Kisumu County, first elected in 2017. He is a renowned academic and political scientist with a PhD from the University of Chicago. His extensive political career includes serving as Senator for Kisumu (2013-2017), Minister for Medical Services, Minister for Planning and National Development, and Member of Parliament for Kisumu Rural Constituency.
1. Academia & Research (1977–early ’90s) After earning his BA (Makerere University), MA and PhD (University of Chicago), he served as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi. He also held visiting professor posts in Mexico and at Addis Ababa University, later becoming Head of Programs at the African Academy of Sciences
2. National Government Leadership (2003–2013) Entering politics in 1992, he served over two decades as MP for Kisumu Rural (including a term as nominated MP), then held key Cabinet positions: Minister for Planning & National Development (2003–2005), where he led the Economic Recovery Strategy and laid groundwork for Vision 2030; and Minister for Medical Services (2008–2013), where he played a pivotal role in establishing the National Health Insurance Fund
3. Devolution & County Leadership (2013–present) After serving as the first County Senator for Kisumu (2013–2017), he was elected Governor in 2017 and re‑elected in 2022. As Governor, he’s focused on devolved governance, healthcare, infrastructure reform, and was appointed in 2023 to the UN Secretary‑General’s Advisory Group on Local & Regional Governments
