Prof.Anyang' Nyong'o was born on 10th October 1943in Ratta, Kisumu, Kenya. He attended Ndiru Primary School between 1953 and 1961 and joined Alliance Highschool from 1962 to 1967.Prof.Anyang' later attended Makerere University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy in 1970. During his time there he was an active student and was appointed Guild President from 1969 to 1970. He also attended University of Chicago for his postgraduate studies where he earned both his MA and PhD in Political Science, completing his studies in 1977.Prof.Anyang' taught at the University of Nairobi between 1977 and 1981 where he held positions as a lecturer and later senior lecturer in the department of Political Science. During his time at the university he was arrested in 1980 as a lecturer due to a significant event related to multi-party democracy.After his tenure at the University of Nairobi he held visiting professorships at El Colegio de Mexico and University of Addis Ababa before taking up a position as the head of programmes of Africa Academy of Sciences in 1987.He later left the academic field and joined the political world in 1992 holding several ministerial and gubernatorial positions in the Kenyan government before his nomination as a Member of Parliament in 1998 to 2002. He was appointed Minister for Planning and National Development where he led formulation of the Economic Recory Strategy. He was then appointed as Minister for Medical Services where he championed for social health insuarance and cancer awareness till his resignation in 2013 after suspected allegations of paying for 'phantom' hospitals using the states medical insuarance. Prof Anyang' then ran for office and was the senator for Kisumu county from 2013 to 2017 when he ran for Governor a position he is currently still serving after being re-elected in 2022.
