Nabii Nabwera Daraja, widely known as Nabii Nabwera, is a prominent Kenyan politician and the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency in Kakamega County. Serving his first term in the National Assembly following the 2022 general elections, he represents the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Beyond his legislative duties, he has emerged as a significant figure in the regional politics of Western Kenya, notably serving as the ODM Kakamega County Branch Chairman. Born into a large family—his father had four wives and 26 children—Nabwera grew up in Kakamega County. His early education began at Mugunga Primary School, where he attended from 1974 to 1981, obtaining his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). He proceeded to Kivaywa Secondary School between 1982 and 1985 to complete his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE), followed by Musingu High School from 1986 to 1987, where he earned his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE). Nabwera continued his academic journey at Moi University, graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Second-Class Honors, Upper Division). Later, he advanced his professional qualifications with a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Technical University (1996–1997) and a postgraduate certification in Organisation Development and Change Management from the ILO Centre in Geneva (2001). Nabwera’s professional career is marked by extensive experience in human resource management and public administration. He began his professional journey in 1992 at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where he served as a Personnel Manager until 1999. Following this, he held several key managerial roles in the private sector, including positions as an Employee Relations Manager at South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited (1999–2004), a Human Resource Manager at Coca-Cola Rift Valley (2004–2005), and similar roles at Delmonte (K) Limited (2005) and Insteel Limited (2006–2008). Between 2008 and 2012, he worked as a consultant for the Kenya Bureau of Standards. His transition into public service began with the onset of devolution in Kenya. Nabwera served as the Chief of Staff and Advisor in the Kakamega County Government from 2013 to 2017. Following a period working with the Council of Governors (2018–2020), he returned to the Kakamega County administration as the Chief Officer for Livestock and Veterinary Services, a role he held until his successful bid for parliamentary office in 2022. In the 13th Parliament, Nabwera has earned a reputation for being an articulate and assertive debater. He has been actively involved in various parliamentary committees, including the Education Committee, the Public Accounts Committee, and the Committee on Selection, focusing on issues related to education, public accountability, and national development. In September 2025, he further consolidated his political influence by being elected as the ODM Kakamega County Branch Chairman, a position that solidified his standing within the party’s regional leadership. Nabwera’s public life has not been without controversy. In 2025, he was involved in public disputes regarding his personal life and faced defamatory allegations from local bloggers, prompting him to pursue legal action to clear his name. Despite these challenges, he remains a central figure in Lugari politics, actively advocating for rural development, school infrastructure, and security in his constituency.
