Linus Kaikai is a distinguished Kenyan journalist and media executive, currently serving as the Group Editorial Director at Royal Media Services (RMS). Known for his leadership in broadcast journalism and his strong advocacy for press freedom, Kaikai has been a defining figure in the Kenyan media landscape for over two decades. Born on August 12, 1974, in Transmara, Narok County, Kaikai was raised in a village near the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Growing up in a family of ten children, his early exposure to news was influenced by his father, who kept the family informed about current affairs despite the remote location. He attended Kilgoris Secondary School before pursuing his professional training at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC), where he earned a diploma in Radio and Television production. He later advanced his academic credentials, obtaining a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master’s degree in International Journalism from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. Kaikai’s career began in the 1990s at the Kenya Television Network (KTN), where he quickly established himself as a talented reporter and editor. His early work gained significant recognition, including the prestigious CNN African Television Journalist of the Year award in 1997 and the Environmental Journalist of the Year award in 1998. Following his initial tenure at KTN, which ended in 1999, Kaikai spent eight years with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). During this period, he progressed from a correspondent to the position of Bureau Chief, gaining extensive experience in international reporting and cross-continental journalism. In 2007, Kaikai returned to Kenya and rejoined KTN as the Managing Editor in charge of Quality and Product Development. In 2009, he moved to the Nation Media Group, where he served as the Managing Editor and eventually as the General Manager of the broadcasting division at NTV. During his time at NTV, he was a prominent voice in the media industry, often navigating the complexities of political reporting in a polarized environment. In 2018, he joined Royal Media Services, where he initially served as the Director of Strategy and Innovation before assuming his current role as the Group Editorial Director. Beyond his executive roles, Kaikai is widely recognized for moderating high-profile political events, including Kenya’s inaugural presidential debates in 2013 and subsequent editions in 2017. A former Chairman of the Kenya Editors' Guild, he has been a vocal proponent of media independence and has frequently championed the protection of journalists during times of political instability. In his personal life, Kaikai is married to Jacinta Mueni. The couple wed in December 2012 and are parents to three children. Through his consistent presence in the newsroom and his strategic influence on media policy, Linus Kaikai remains a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern Kenyan journalism.
