Joash Nyamache Nyamoko is the Member of Parliament for North Mugirango Constituency in Nyamira County, serving his second consecutive term in the National Assembly. First elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, he has become one of the most influential leaders from the Gusii region aligned to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Before moving to national politics, he served as Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly (2013–2017), presiding over the formative years of devolution and shaping legislative and oversight practice in the county assembly. In the 13th Parliament, Nyamoko is the Chairperson of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Lands, a key committee overseeing land policy, legislation and the budgets of the Ministry of Lands and the National Land Commission. Under his leadership, the committee has handled the Land Laws (Amendment) Bill, stamp-duty revenue oversight and hearings on digitisation of land records. Known for a firm but understated style, he also acts as a central UDA point-man in Nyamira, regularly sharing platforms with senior Kenya Kwanza figures and fronting the coalition’s agenda in the region.
Two-term MP for North Mugirango: Elected in 2017 (then under Jubilee) and re-elected in 2022 on a UDA ticket, giving him sustained legitimacy and continuity in representing North Mugirango.
Chairperson, Departmental Committee on Lands: Leads the National Assembly Lands Committee, steering scrutiny of the Land Laws (Amendment) Bill, digitisation of land records, pending-bills audits and budget oversight of the State Department for Lands.
Pressure over historical land injustices and pending bills: As Lands Committee chair, he is often at the centre of emotionally charged hearings on historical land injustices and KSh 18.2 billion in pending bills at the State Department for Lands, drawing scrutiny from civil society and affected communities.
Balancing party loyalty and local interests: In a politically competitive Gusii region, his strong UDA alignment means his votes on contentious national issues—such as tax and land-housing policy—are closely watched and sometimes criticised by opposition supporters.
Limited transparency on personal business/wealth: Public records focus on his public offices, with little detail on private business interests or assets; some watchdog voices call for fuller asset disclosure from all committee chairs, including Nyamoko, in line with Chapter Six. (Inference based on transparency discourse around MPs generally, anchored to his role as a powerful committee chair.)
Foundational devolution role: As Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly (2013–2017), he guided the institution through its first term, setting precedents on procedure, budget approval and oversight of the county executive.
Regional UDA organiser: Identified in party and alliance profiles as a key UDA leader in Nyamira, including being listed as a co-chair in an international UDA-linked alliance platform, underscoring his growing profile beyond the constituency.
