Jeff Williams (born 1963) is an American business executive recognized for his long tenure at Apple Inc., where he served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) from 2015 until his retirement in November 2025. Known for his disciplined approach to supply chain management and product operations, Williams played a pivotal role in scaling Apple’s hardware production and diversifying its product ecosystem, most notably through the development of the Apple Watch and the company’s health-focused initiatives. Since 2026, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors at The Walt Disney Company. Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Williams attended Jesse O. Sanderson High School. He pursued his higher education within his home state, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University in 1985. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. During his time at North Carolina State University, Williams was a Caldwell Fellow, an experience that helped shape his leadership and analytical problem-solving skills. Williams began his professional career at IBM in 1985, where he spent 13 years working in various engineering and operations roles. This foundational period provided him with extensive experience in manufacturing and supply chain logistics, expertise that would later become central to his success at Apple. In 1998, he was recruited to Apple as the Head of Worldwide Procurement, joining the company during a period of transition as it recovered from significant financial challenges. At Apple, Williams rose through the executive ranks, becoming a key deputy to CEO Tim Cook. He was named Vice President of Operations in 2004 and Senior Vice President of Operations in 2010. Throughout his tenure, he was responsible for the company’s global supply chain, customer service, and support operations. Williams was deeply involved in the operational success of major product launches, including the iPod and the original iPhone. Perhaps his most significant individual project was the development of the Apple Watch, which he championed from its inception. Under his leadership, the Apple Watch evolved into a central piece of the company’s wearable technology strategy, paving the way for Apple’s deeper integration into health and fitness tracking through initiatives such as the Apple Heart Study, ResearchKit, and CareKit. In December 2015, Williams was appointed Chief Operating Officer, a position he held for a decade. During his time as COO, his influence extended beyond operations; in 2019, he assumed oversight of Apple’s design team, further consolidating his control over both the structural manufacturing and the aesthetic vision of Apple products. In July 2025, Apple announced a leadership transition, confirming that Williams would step down as COO by the end of that month, with Sabih Khan succeeding him. Williams officially retired from Apple in November 2025, concluding a 27-year career with the company. Known for a private personal life, Williams is widely regarded by industry peers as an "operational master" whose collaborative relationship with Tim Cook helped define Apple’s logistical capabilities. Following his retirement from the tech sector, he transitioned into governance, joining the board of The Walt Disney Company in 2026.
