Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete (born 1950) is the 4th President of the United Republic of Tanzania, having served two terms from 2005 to 2015. Nicknamed "The Diplomat" and "JK," Kikwete is arguably the most influential living elder statesman in Tanzania. Before ascending to the presidency, he was the country’s longest-serving Minister of Foreign Affairs, building an impeccable global network that he later used to attract billions in foreign aid and infrastructural investment. Although he officially retired in 2015, handing power to John Magufuli, Kikwete remains the undisputed "Godfather" of the ruling CCM party. During the turbulent Magufuli era (2015-2021), Kikwete retreated from the limelight to survive the anti-corruption purges that targeted his allies. However, following the ascent of President Samia Suluhu Hassan (who served as a minister under Kikwete), his faction violently reclaimed control of the state apparatus. By 2025/2026, his behind-the-scenes maneuvering was widely credited with neutralizing internal party rebellions and securing Samia’s re-election mandate. Globally, he serves as the High Representative for the African Union and Chairman of the Global Partnership for Education.
