Dr. Gideon Maina Muriuki (born September 1, 1964) is a prominent Kenyan banker and executive, widely recognized for his long-standing leadership as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Muriuki is credited with engineering one of the most significant corporate turnarounds in Kenya's financial history, transforming Co-operative Bank from a loss-making entity into one of the country's largest and most profitable financial institutions. Born in Mung’aria village in Tetu, Nyeri County, to Ben Muriuki Gakenge and Beatrice Muthoni Muriuki, Gideon Muriuki grew up in a family that placed a high value on education. He began his early schooling at a nursery school in Kaigonde village, later attending Kaigonde Primary School and Kiganjo Primary School. He pursued his secondary education at the prestigious Kagumo High School, where he obtained his 'O' and 'A' Level certificates. Muriuki later enrolled at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Muriuki’s professional journey in the banking sector began in 1989 when he was recruited as a graduate trainee at Barclays Bank of Kenya, where he served until 1992. He subsequently moved to Standard Chartered Bank, working there for four years. In 1996, he joined the Co-operative Bank of Kenya as a Senior Corporate Manager. His aptitude for corporate strategy and financial management saw him rise rapidly within the organization; by 1999, he had been promoted to the position of Director of Corporate and Institutional Banking. In 2001, Muriuki was appointed as the Managing Director of Co-operative Bank. At the time, the institution was facing a severe financial crisis, having reported a historic loss of KSh 2.3 billion in 2000. Under his leadership, the bank embarked on a comprehensive restructuring program that focused on improving operational efficiency, strengthening management controls, and addressing the high levels of non-performing assets. His "turnaround strategy"—which he has often described as being underpinned by principles of faith, professionalism, and a shared work culture—successfully returned the bank to profitability. Over the following two decades, he oversaw massive growth in the bank's asset base, customer numbers, and regional expansion, including operations in South Sudan and the acquisition of Kingdom Bank. Beyond his executive duties, Muriuki has served in various leadership capacities, including as the Vice President for Africa at the International Co-operative Banking Association (ICBA) and as a former chairman of the Governing Council of the Africa International University and the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA). His contributions to the financial sector and national development have been recognized with numerous accolades. He was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 2005, the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) in 2011, and the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) in 2017. Internationally, he received the Chevalier de l'ordre National du Burkina Faso from the President of Burkina Faso in recognition of his efforts in rural finance development. He has also been honored with multiple "CEO of the Year" awards from various organizations, including the International Banker and EMEA Finance. Dr. Muriuki holds a Fellowship at the Kenya Institute of Bankers and has received several honorary doctorates, including a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Co-operative University of Kenya and an honorary doctorate in Business Management. He is married to Joyce Wanjiku Muriuki, and the couple has five children. Throughout his tenure, Muriuki has remained a pivotal figure in the Kenyan economy, consistently advocating for the cooperative movement's role in financial inclusion and national wealth creation.
