Wanjiru Gitu, known professionally as Fena Gitu or the “Fenamenal Woman”, was born on 25 April 1991 in Nairobi. She attended Precious Blood Secondary School and later studied International Relations and Psychology at the United States International University. Fena began her career as a gospel singer and won the Fête de la Musique competition at Alliance Française in 2008; she then joined singer Dela as a backing vocalist before going solo in 2010. She has since collaborated with numerous artists and written songs for Tiwa Savage and Sauti Sol. In 2017 she launched the Fena Gitu Foundation, performed at the Afro-punk celebration in New York and won Best Female Artist at the Groove Awards. She later launched the FenamenalxDenri leather bag collection and became a Smirnoff brand ambassador. Fena has continued to perform at major events, was named one of Meta’s rising African stars in 2023 and appointed Spotify’s EQUAL Africa ambassador in 2024. She publicly cut ties with producer Jaaz Odongo after sexual assault allegations were made against him and has stated that speculation about her sexuality is no one’s business, emphasising her focus on music.
