Emmanuel John Nchimbi (born 24 December 1971) is a Tanzanian politician and diplomat who serves as the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania. A longtime stalwart of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, Nchimbi’s career has spanned multiple decades of service in both the executive and legislative branches of the Tanzanian government, as well as in the diplomatic corps. He assumed the office of Vice President on 3 November 2025. Born in Mbeya, Tanzania, Nchimbi is the son of John Nchimbi, a former Assistant Commissioner of Police and retired CCM Regional Secretary. His upbringing in a family deeply embedded in public service provided an early foundation for his eventual entry into national politics. Nchimbi received his primary education at Oysterbay Primary School in Dar es Salaam from 1980 to 1986. He continued his secondary education at Uru Secondary School (1987–1989) and later Sangu Secondary School, where he completed his Form Four studies in 1990. He then attended Forest Hill Secondary School in Mbeya for his advanced level education between 1991 and 1993. Nchimbi pursued higher education at the Institute of Development Management (IDM) Mzumbe in Morogoro, where he earned an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration (1994–1997). His academic pursuits continued throughout his political career; he later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Banking and Finance from Mzumbe University (2001–2003) and subsequently completed a PhD at the same institution (2008–2011). Nchimbi’s political career began in 1997 when he was appointed as a member of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC). His influence within the party grew quickly, and in 1998, he was elected as the National Chairman of the CCM Youth Union (UVCCM). During this period, he also served as an employee of the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) from 1998 to 2003. In 2003, he transitioned into formal government service, serving as the District Commissioner for Bunda until 2005. In the 2005 general elections, Nchimbi was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Songea Urban constituency. His legislative career was marked by a rapid ascent through the executive ranks. Under the administration of President Jakaya Kikwete, Nchimbi held several ministerial and deputy ministerial portfolios. These included serving as Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Sports (2006); Deputy Minister of Labour, Employment and Youth Development (2006–2008); and Deputy Minister of Defence and National Service (2008–2010). He later served as the Minister of Information, Culture, Sports and Youth (2010–2012) and as the Minister of Home Affairs (2012–2013). Following his departure from the Cabinet, Nchimbi shifted his focus toward diplomacy. In 2016, he was appointed as Tanzania’s Ambassador to Brazil, a position he held until 2021. In 2022, he was reassigned as the Ambassador of Tanzania to Egypt, serving in that capacity until August 2023. Nchimbi returned to the forefront of domestic politics in January 2024, when he was appointed Secretary-General of the CCM. Tasked with reorganizing the party’s machinery and preparing for the 2025 general elections, he quickly became a central figure in the party’s strategy. In early 2025, President Samia Suluhu Hassan proposed Nchimbi as her running mate for the 2025 General Election. Following the party's success in the polls, he was sworn in as the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania on 3 November 2025. As Vice President, he occupies the second-highest office in the nation, acting as the designated successor to the President and a key figure in the administration’s governance and development agenda.
