Dekow Mohamed Barrow is the Member of Parliament for Garissa Township, elected in a fierce by-election in January 2023. He succeeded Aden Duale, who resigned to become the Cabinet Secretary for Defence. Dekow, popularly known as "Major," ran on a UDA ticket and defeated the UDM candidate in a contest that tested the supremacy of the ruling coalition in North Eastern Kenya. Before politics, Dekow was a businessman and a close ally of Duale. His legislative focus has been on education infrastructure and youth employment. He has maintained a relatively low national profile compared to his predecessor but is influential in Garissa clan politics (Abduwak clan dynamics).
