Daniel Toroitich arap Moi (born 2 September 1924 in Sacho, Baringo) was Kenya's second President. He took office on 22 August 1978 after Jomo Kenyatta's death and served until 30 December 2002. Popularly known as 'Nyayo', he previously served as Vice-President (1967–1978). During his long rule he maintained stability, initiated free primary education, and later introduced multi-party democracy, though his regime was criticised for authoritarianism. He died on 4 February 2020.
