Dr. Betty Muthoni Gikonyo (born 27 May 1950) is a Kenyan paediatric cardiologist, hospital founder, and health-sector leader. She earned her MBChB (1975) and MMed in Paediatrics at the University of Nairobi, completed a post-doctoral fellowship in paediatric cardiology at the University of Minnesota, and later an MBA at Daystar University. In 2006 she co-founded The Karen Hospital in Nairobi, which opened as a 102-bed multi-specialty facility and has since grown through satellite branches; she served as CEO from 2006 to 2020 and now chairs the hospital’s board. Beyond clinical practice and hospital leadership, Gikonyo co-founded the Heart to Heart Foundation in 1993 to fund cardiac care for children and popularised the annual Heart Run charity drives; her autobiography, The Girl Who Dared to Dream (MvuleAfrica, 2013), chronicles this journey. Profiles also note state honours (SS, MBS) and decades of mentorship that helped establish paediatric cardiology locally.
