Member of Parliament
Paul Ongili Babu Owino (born 10 October 1989) is a Kenyan politician, activist, and lawyer known for his rise from hardship to national prominence. Born and raised in Kisumu’s Nyalenda slum, he supported his education by selling chang’aa. He studied at Kisumu Township Primary School and Kisumu Boys High School before completing Cambridge A-levels at Millennium School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi, graduating with first-class honours. He later pursued both an MBA and a Bachelor of Laws degree. As chairperson of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU), Owino became a prominent figure in student politics, leading demonstrations and negotiating reduced tuition fees. In August 2017, Owino was elected Member of Parliament for Embakasi East on an ODM ticket, securing re-election in 2022. He has used his platform to fund scholarships for needy students and, in May 2022, pledged to pay secondary school fees for two siblings unable to join Form One due to financial hardship. Owino’s estimated net worth ranges between KSh 300 million and 500 million, largely attributed to investments and political influence. While admired for his energy and commitment to youth empowerment, he is equally known for his combative rhetoric and legal controversies. In 2020, he was charged with attempted murder after the shooting of DJ Evolve, a case in which he claimed self-defence.
