Andrew Mwadime is a prominent Kenyan politician who currently serves as the Governor of Taita-Taveta County. A former educator and banker, Mwadime transitioned into public service in 2013, representing Mwatate Constituency in the National Assembly before ascending to the gubernatorial seat in 2022. He is widely recognized for his grassroots-oriented political style and his focus on infrastructure, education, and economic development in the Taita-Taveta region. Born on April 6, 1964, in Chawia, Taita-Taveta County, Mwadime’s formative years were spent in his home county, where he attended Chawia Primary School. His academic journey led him to Allidina Visram High School in Mombasa for his Ordinary Level (O-Level) studies and subsequently to Kenyatta High School in Taita for his Advanced Level (A-Level) certificate. He pursued higher education at Kenyatta University, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, majoring in Mathematics. Demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional development, he later obtained a Diploma in Marketing from the Mombasa Polytechnic (now the Technical University of Mombasa) in 2001. Mwadime’s professional career began in the education sector. He served as a teacher at Taru Secondary School and later taught at Tarassaa Boys Secondary School in Tana River County. His pedagogical skills and leadership capabilities saw him rise to the position of Deputy Headmaster at Ngangao Secondary School. In the mid-1990s, he transitioned to the corporate sector, joining Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) as a graduate trainee. Over the following years, he advanced through the ranks, holding significant roles including Regional Manager for the Coast Region, Country Head of KCB Tanzania, and Head of Card Business for KCB East and Central Africa. His tenure in the banking industry provided him with a strong foundation in financial management and organizational leadership. In 2013, Mwadime ventured into elective politics, running for the parliamentary seat of Mwatate Constituency on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket. He successfully defeated the incumbent, Calist Andrew Mwatela, and was subsequently re-elected in 2017. During his two terms as a Member of Parliament (2013–2022), he served on various parliamentary committees, including the Public Accounts Committee, the Pensions Committee, and the Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives. His legislative tenure was characterized by a focus on education infrastructure, including the construction of modern, multi-story school buildings to optimize land use and improve learning environments within his constituency. In the lead-up to the 2022 general elections, Mwadime resigned from his political party affiliations to run as an independent candidate for the Taita-Taveta gubernatorial seat. In a decisive electoral victory in August 2022, he polled 49,901 votes, defeating the incumbent governor, Granton Samboja, and several other contestants. As Governor, Mwadime has prioritized revamping the county’s economy, enhancing agricultural production, and fostering unity among local leaders to drive regional development. He also serves as the Chairperson of the Water, Forestry, and Natural Resources Committee within the Council of Governors, reflecting his broader policy interests. His leadership is marked by a pragmatic approach to governance, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and the improvement of public service delivery for the residents of Taita-Taveta.
