Abass Sheikh Mohamed, widely known by his political moniker "Abass KK," is a prominent Kenyan politician and business administrator currently serving as the Senator for Wajir County. A long-time figure in regional politics and livestock sector advocacy, he has held various public and private sector roles, building a career characterized by his focus on agricultural finance, natural resource management, and parliamentary leadership. Born in 1958 in Wajir County, Abass Sheikh Mohamed pursued his early education at Wajir Primary School before attending Mandera High School. His academic pursuits led him to Egerton University, where he earned a Diploma in Range Management (1984–1987) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Management (1999–2001). Demonstrating a commitment to specialized professional growth, he later obtained a postgraduate diploma in Sustainable Local Economic Development and an MBA in Strategic Marketing from Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Before entering the national political arena, Mohamed established a career rooted in the agricultural and livestock sectors, which are vital to the economy of Wajir and Northern Kenya. He served as a Branch Manager at the Agricultural Finance Office from 1991 to 1999. Subsequently, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council (KLMC) from 2002 to 2012. During his tenure at KLMC, he became a well-known voice for pastoralist communities, advocating for better market access and sustainable development in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya. Mohamed’s entry into elective politics occurred in 2013, when he was elected to the 11th Parliament of Kenya as the Member of Parliament for Wajir East Constituency. Running on a United Republican Party (URP) ticket with the support of the Jubilee Coalition, he served in the National Assembly until 2017. During his parliamentary term, he was a member of the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations, where he gained experience in national policy and security matters. After failing to retain his seat in the 2017 general election, he transitioned to the private sector, serving as the Managing Director of Red Sea Co. Ltd from 2018 to 2022. In 2022, Mohamed made a successful return to elective politics. He contested the Wajir County Senatorial seat on a United Democratic Movement (UDM) ticket, securing 36,201 votes to defeat his closest challenger. As a Senator, he has taken on significant leadership responsibilities, including serving as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations. In this capacity, he has been involved in oversight regarding the functioning of county governments and the implementation of devolution. He is also a member of various other committees, including Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and the Liaison Committee. Known for his close political alignment with the Kenya Kwanza administration, he remains an influential figure in North Eastern Kenya's political landscape, focusing on issues such as drought mitigation, resource allocation for arid counties, and the strengthening of devolved governance.
