Ruth Chepngetich Provisionally Suspended After Testing Positive for Banned Diuretic

Nairobi, Kenya – July 17, 2025

World marathon record-holder Ruth Chepngetich has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a banned diuretic commonly used to mask the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) confirmed.

The AIU reported that a sample collected from the Kenyan athlete on March 14 tested positive for the substance. Though not immediately suspended, Chepngetich voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension starting April 19, while the investigation continued.

“Chepngetich was not provisionally suspended at the time of notification; however, on 19 April, she opted for a voluntary provisional suspension,” said AIU head Brett Clothier, adding that a formal Notice of Charge has now been issued.

Chepngetich, 30, rose to global prominence after setting the women’s marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon in October 2024. Her stellar career had made her a national icon and a symbol of Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running. However, her sudden withdrawal from the London Marathon in April 2025, citing personal reasons, now appears to have occurred around the same time the doping inquiry began.

Her agent has declined to comment on the suspension.

The case is set to be referred to a tribunal once the AIU concludes its investigation. If found guilty, Chepngetich could face a lengthy ban, potentially jeopardizing her athletic career and legacy.

This development comes at a time when Kenyan athletics faces increasing scrutiny over doping violations. Despite ongoing efforts, including increased funding for anti-doping programs by local authorities, the country continues to grapple with a string of high-profile cases that threaten its international reputation.

The Athletics Integrity Unit reiterated its commitment to clean sport and affirmed that all athletes are subject to rigorous testing regardless of their status or achievements.
