Over 100 referees and judges to converge in Dar es Salaam for high-level capacity building to professionalize the sport.

In a decisive move to professionalize aquatics in East Africa, the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) is convening a landmark capacity-building clinic. Over 100 officials will gather in Dar es Salaam to overhaul the standards of officiating in the country.
Scheduled for February 28 at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) new Library, the clinic represents a strategic investment in the sport's infrastructure. Organized in collaboration with Prime Sports Agency, the one-day intensive workshop aims to align local officiating with global best practices, ensuring that Tanzanian swimming competitions meet international standards of fairness and technical accuracy.
Edwin Karume, the TSA officials coordinator, emphasized that this is not merely a refresher course but a fundamental upgrading of skills. The session will unify referees, judges, and club administrators from across the regions, fostering a standardized interpretation of the rules.
"When referees and judges clearly understand the latest guidelines, they are better equipped to make accurate decisions," Karume stated. "This not only reduces disputes but also builds trust among athletes, coaches, and fans."
This initiative comes at a time when East African swimming is looking to make its mark on the continental stage. By investing in the "soft infrastructure" of the sport—the human capital that runs the meets—the TSA is laying the groundwork for higher-quality competitions.
For the athletes, this means a more professional environment where their performances are judged with competence and integrity. As the clinic approaches, the expectation is that this will be a turning point for the administrative quality of Tanzanian swimming.
