A University of Nairobi student was fatally stabbed by his roommate after an argument over flushing and cleaning their hostel toilet. Police in Kikuyu have arrested the suspect, 22, as shocked classmates grapple with how a mundane chore dispute turned into a deadly altercation.
Kikuyu, Kenya – A minor disagreement over bathroom cleaning turned deadly on September 2 at the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu campus, leaving one student dead and another in police custody.
Authorities say third-year student Brian Wambui was fatally stabbed by his roommate, 22-year-old Justus Otieno, following a heated argument about flushing and cleaning their shared hostel toilet. Witnesses reported the quarrel began as an exchange of words before Otieno allegedly ran for a knife and stabbed Wambui in the ensuing chaos.
Friends rushed Wambui to a nearby clinic, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. His body was later transferred to PCEA Thogoto Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Kikuyu sub-county DCI officer Omondi Ogola confirmed the suspect’s arrest at the scene. “The disagreement escalated… that is when the suspect dashed to the house to get a weapon,” he said, urging students to embrace non-violent conflict resolution.
The incident has rattled the campus community, forcing a temporary suspension of classes as grief counselors provided support. “It’s heartbreaking that a life was lost over something so small,” a student leader said, appealing for calm.
Detectives are interviewing witnesses and compiling statements. Prosecutors are expected to charge the suspect with murder once investigations are complete. Police have called on students nationwide to resolve disputes peacefully, stressing that “no disagreement – however minor – should ever cost a life.”
