KICOWU Warns Politicians Against Scapegoating IEBC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nairobi – May 18

The Kenya Independent Commissions Workers Union (KICOWU) has issued a stern warning to political leaders, cautioning them against using the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as a scapegoat in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in Nairobi, KICOWU Secretary General Njeru Kanyamba called out what he described as a worrying trend where politicians discredit the IEBC preemptively, setting the stage to contest election outcomes even before the first vote is cast.

“Politicians must stop pointing fingers at the IEBC for their potential losses. Such inflammatory rhetoric only serves to undermine public trust in democratic institutions and may incite unrest,” said Kanyamba.

Call for Responsible Political Conduct

Kanyamba urged leaders to focus on issue-based campaigns and respect the rule of law, emphasizing that credible elections depend not only on the electoral body but also on the conduct of political players.

He further called on political parties to educate their supporters on democratic values, including the importance of accepting electoral outcomes with dignity and peace.

IEBC Must Be Allowed to Work Independently

KICOWU reiterated its support for the IEBC and called for the Commission to be allowed to carry out its mandate free from political intimidation or manipulation. Kanyamba noted that the credibility of the 2027 polls will hinge on the impartiality of the process and the professionalism of all stakeholders involved.

Maintaining Peace as Priority

The statement comes amid rising political temperatures and renewed focus on electoral reforms. With the country still bearing scars from past post-election violence, KICOWU’s message serves as a timely reminder of the need for maturity, restraint, and commitment to peace ahead of the next elections.
