President Ruto’s UDA party and allied ODM counterparts have secured key seats across the country in the just-concluded by-elections, setting the stage for the 2027 political contest.
Newly elected representatives are set for swearing-in this week after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officially gazetted the winners of the November 27 by-elections. The polls, held to fill vacancies from various causes including deaths and appointments, have been widely interpreted as a crucial test of political strength for the nation's dominant parties.
The results signal a consolidation of power for President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and its allies in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who together scooped up all contested parliamentary seats. This outcome reshapes local leadership and provides a telling preview of the political currents flowing towards the 2027 General Election.
The ruling UDA party demonstrated significant reach, capturing the Baringo County senatorial seat and four National Assembly positions. Kiprono Chemetei of UDA is the new Baringo Senator after securing 55,246 votes. The party also claimed victory in Malava, Banissa, and North Igembe constituencies, showcasing its growing influence in diverse regions.
ODM, meanwhile, proved its enduring dominance in its traditional strongholds. The party comfortably retained seats in Kasipul, Ugunja, and Magarini constituencies, affirming the loyalty of its support base. Harrison Garama Kombe took the Magarini seat with 17,909 votes, while in Homa Bay, Ongondo Boyd Were clinched the Kasipul seat with 16,819 votes.
The mini-polls were not without their drama. The Mbeere North contest, in particular, was framed as a high-stakes battle between factions within the ruling coalition, pitting President Ruto's allies against those of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. UDA's eventual victory there with candidate Lewa Muthee Mwenda has been seen as a significant political statement.
At the county assembly level, the political landscape appears more varied. While UDA secured the majority of the ward seats, other parties and independent candidates also made their mark. Key victories for various parties include:
Despite the confirmed results, the election day was marked by challenges. Reports from several constituencies indicated low voter turnout, and isolated incidents of violence and claims of voter bribery were noted in areas like Malava and Kasipul. In a gazette notice dated December 1, 2025, the IEBC confirmed that the polls complied with the Constitution and the Elections Act, paving the way for the new leaders to take office.
As these new leaders prepare to be sworn in, their immediate focus will be on delivering services to their constituents. For the nation, however, the echoes of these by-elections will continue to reverberate, shaping political alliances and strategies for the bigger contest ahead.
