Toronto is paralyzed by a record-breaking 46cm snowfall, cancelling 500+ flights and shutting down the city in what is now officially the snowiest January in history.

Canada’s financial capital has been brought to a frozen standstill. In a weather event that meteorologists are calling "historic" and locals are calling a nightmare, Toronto was buried under an avalanche of white powder on Sunday, smashing records that have stood for nearly a century.
Pearson International Airport, the country’s busiest hub, looked more like an Arctic outpost than an airport. Official data confirms a staggering 46 centimeters of snow fell in a single day, obliterating the previous single-day record set way back in 1966. Downtown Toronto fared even worse, with some pockets reporting accumulations of up to 56 centimeters, leaving streetcars derailed and highways resembling parking lots.
The impact was immediate and catastrophic. Over 500 flights were cancelled, stranding thousands of passengers. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and other major boards declared a rare "snow day," closing schools across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) today. For the Kenyan diaspora in the city, accustomed to milder winters or at least functional plowing, the storm was a shock to the system.
"I’ve lived here for ten years, and I’ve never seen anything like this," said Maina Kamau, a Kenyan resident in Scarborough. "I opened my door and was met with a wall of snow. The car is gone; it's just a mound now."
The storm is expected to cost the city millions in lost productivity and cleanup costs. With transit systems crippled and businesses shuttered, the "Snowmageddon" of 2026 serves as a stark reminder of nature’s capacity to humble even the most modern infrastructure. As Torontonians break out the shovels, the question remains: is this an anomaly, or the new normal for the Great White North?
