The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is fighting a new wave of cyber-fraudsters selling fake appointment letters to desperate youths.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is fighting a new wave of cyber-fraudsters selling fake appointment letters to desperate youths, exposing the vulnerability of Kenya’s unemployment crisis.
It is a scam as old as the port itself, yet it continues to claim victims. The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has been forced to issue a string of frantic disclaimers this week, battling a sophisticated syndicate that is issuing counterfeit "Official Appointment" letters. These documents, stamped with forged seals and signed by non-existent HR managers, come with a catch: a "facilitation fee" sent via M-PESA.
"KPA does not charge any fees at any stage of recruitment," the parastatal reiterated in a press release on Sunday. But for the thousands of young Kenyans seeking a foothold in the blue economy, the warning often comes too late.
The fraudsters are evolving. They no longer meet in back alleys; they operate via LinkedIn and legitimate-looking websites. They target the desperation of the "tarmacking" generation. The scam works because KPA is indeed one of the most coveted employers in the region. The promise of a pensionable job at the Mombasa Port is worth risking a family’s savings.
Red Flags Identified by KPA:
This crisis highlights a critical gap in digital literacy. While young Kenyans are tech-savvy, the sophistication of these forgeries can fool even the cautious. The syndicates use psychological pressure—"Pay by 5 PM or the slot goes to someone else."
KPA’s advice is simple: Trust only kpa.co.ke. But until the underlying desperation of the job market is addressed, the "Port of Lies" will continue to find willing vessels.
