FCT Police arrest a "One-Chance" robbery syndicate linked to the murder of lawyer Mediatrix Chigbo, exposing the deadly dangers of unregistered taxis in Abuja.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has scored a major victory against the "One-Chance" robbery gangs terrorizing Abuja. In a breakthrough operation, detectives arrested a three-man syndicate linked to the brutal murder of Barrister Mediatrix Chigbo, whose death sparked outrage across the legal community.
"One-Chance" robbery—where criminals pose as taxi drivers to trap, rob, and often harm unsuspecting passengers—has become a plague in Nigeria's capital. The arrest of the suspects, led by a driver driving a black Volkswagen Golf 3, peels back the curtain on the deadly logistics of these urban predators.
According to FCT Police Commissioner Miller Dantawaye, Ms. Chigbo boarded the vehicle on the evening of January 5, believing it to be a regular taxi. "She was unknowingly entering a moving prison," Dantawaye said. Once inside, the men overpowered her, stripping her of valuables before inflicting fatal injuries.
While the arrests bring some closure, the incident highlights the collapse of safe public transport in Abuja. For residents, every commute is a gamble. The police have urged the public to use only registered motor parks, but in a city starved of infrastructure, desperate commuters continue to take the risk.
