ODM officially mandates Oburu Oginga to lead coalition talks with President Ruto’s UDA, signaling a formal realignment ahead of 2027 and a potential end to the Azimio coalition.
The political tectonic plates are shifting. In a move that formalizes what was once a whisper in the corridors of power, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially mandated its Party Leader, Dr. Oburu Oginga, to lead structured coalition negotiations with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The decision, ratified by ODM's Central Management Committee (CMC), signals the death knell of the Azimio la Umoja coalition and the birth of a new, formidable political machine ahead of the 2027 General Election. Oburu, the elder statesman and custodian of the Odinga political dynasty, wasted no time in drawing a line in the sand for internal dissenters.
Speaking at a charged rally in Kibra, Oburu issued a stark ultimatum to party rebels opposing the deal: shape up or ship out. "We have no intention of expelling anyone, but if you cannot abide by the party's strategic direction, you are free to leave," he declared. The message was widely interpreted as a shot across the bow for factional leaders like Edwin Sifuna, who have been skeptical of getting into bed with the government.
"We entered this government through the window," Oburu admitted, referring to the "broad-based" cabinet appointments of 2024. "In 2027, we want to enter through the front door, with a signed agreement and a guaranteed share of power."
For ODM, this is a pragmatic calculation. After decades of being the "government in waiting," the party leadership has decided that cooperation offers a surer path to the table than confrontation. However, the risk of alienating its radical base—who have spent years opposing Ruto—is real.
As the drafting of the coalition agreement begins in earnest, Kenya is witnessing the consolidation of a mega-party reminiscent of the NARC era. The question is no longer if ODM and UDA will work together, but how much orange will be painted onto the yellow canvas of the ruling party.
