The 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium reaches 80% completion, silencing critics as Kenya races to finish the state-of-the-art venue ahead of AFCON 2027.

The skepticism was palpable when the ground was broken. Yet, rising from the red dust of Jamhuri Grounds is a concrete behemoth that defies the usual pace of Kenyan public projects. The 60,000-seater Talanta Sports City—soon to be christened the Raila Odinga International Stadium—is now 80% complete, a staggering feat of engineering and political will.
With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) looming, the pressure is immense. Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, during a high-level inspection this Friday, declared the facility "on course" for a March 2026 handover. But beyond the concrete, the stadium is a symbol of Kenya’s desperate bid to reclaim its sporting dignity.
The structure is imposing. The terraces are fully formed, creating a cauldron-like atmosphere designed to intimidate visiting teams. The canopy roof, a signature of modern stadia, is currently being hoisted into place.
"We are not just building a stadium; we are building a legacy," PS Mwangi noted. But challenges remain. Access roads from Ngong Road need expansion to handle the projected traffic chaos. Power stability is another headache, requiring dedicated substations.
For the skeptical Kenyan fan, used to the ghostly promises of "five new stadiums," Talanta is a shock to the system. It is actually happening. Come 2027, when the whistle blows for the opening match, Nairobi will finally have a theater worthy of its passion.
