Malaysia and Indonesia block Elon Musk's Grok AI, citing its failure to prevent the creation of non-consensual deepfake pornography, setting a global regulatory precedent.

Southeast Asia has drawn a line in the digital sand. In a coordinated regulatory strike, Malaysia and Indonesia have become the first nations to block access to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok. The reason? The tool’s "unrestricted" ability to generate non-consensual sexual deepfakes of women and children.
The ban is a major blow to X (formerly Twitter), which had touted Grok as the "uncensored" alternative to ChatGPT. Regulators in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta ruled that "freedom of speech does not include the freedom to undress women digitally."
Users had found that Grok’s image generator lacked the safety filters present in rival AIs. It could be tricked into creating photorealistic nude images of celebrities, politicians, and even minors. "This is a violation of human dignity," said Indonesian Minister Meutya Hafid.
The move highlights the growing "Digital Sovereignty" of the Global South. Nations are no longer waiting for Silicon Valley to police itself; they are pulling the plug.
