A nursing student is dead and another in custody following a violent altercation in Makueni County, allegedly over a love dispute. The killing is now raising urgent questions about public apathy after eyewitnesses claimed bystanders refused to help the bleeding victim.

A second-year nursing student from Goshen Medical College in Thika died in the early hours of Sunday, November 2, 2025, after being stabbed in the neck in Makindu, Makueni County. The victim, identified as Gloria, was celebrating the completion of her clinical attachment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital with two female classmates. The celebration ended in a violent altercation that left Gloria dead, another student injured, and the third, Sharon Muteti, arrested as the primary suspect, according to police reports cited by multiple Kenyan news outlets.
The three students had returned to their rented room in Makindu town after a night out when the fatal confrontation occurred. Makueni County police are investigating the motive, which is widely suspected to be a love triangle. Doctors at Makindu Sub-County Hospital confirmed that Gloria succumbed to her injuries at the facility. The hospital's medical superintendent, Dr. Emmanuel Laiposha, stated on Sunday that a second student was also treated for knife injuries but has since been stabilized. The suspect is reportedly being held under police guard at the same hospital.
The tragedy has been compounded by disturbing reports from the scene suggesting a profound lack of public intervention. Eyewitnesses, including a neighbour who recorded parts of the incident, reported that Gloria, bleeding heavily, pleaded for help from a crowd that had gathered, but her cries were ignored. One neighbour recounted a desperate, failed attempt to secure transport to the hospital for the victim. "I even asked a man who owned a boda boda to accept KSh 1,000 so that I could use his motorbike to save her life, but he refused and asked me to leave him alone," the neighbour told reporters on Monday, November 3, 2025.
This alleged inaction highlights a phenomenon known as the 'bystander effect,' where the presence of multiple onlookers can inhibit individuals from intervening in an emergency. Social psychologists suggest this occurs due to a 'diffusion of responsibility,' where each person assumes someone else will act. In Kenya, this issue has been observed in various emergencies, where onlookers sometimes opt to record incidents on their phones rather than provide aid. This case has ignited public discourse on social media about civic responsibility and moral decay, with many Kenyans expressing outrage over the reported apathy in Makindu.
Police detectives have launched a full investigation into the killing. They are reviewing video evidence captured by a neighbour and are expected to record formal statements from more witnesses. Authorities have indicated that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the altercation and that murder charges are expected upon the conclusion of their investigation. The full names of the victim and the third student involved have not yet been officially released. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REQUIRED.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the communities in both Makindu and Thika. Goshen Medical College had not issued a public statement by Monday morning, November 3, 2025. The killing of a young student on the cusp of her career has underscored the tragic consequences of unresolved personal conflicts and raises critical questions for the community regarding its role and responsibility when witnessing violence. The local leadership has condemned the incident, calling for peaceful conflict resolution among youth. The case is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of students living away from home and the devastating impact of violence that cuts short promising young lives.
