A US-based Kenyan family is devastated after losing three children—Emmanuel, Kairu, and Njeri—in a horrific accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway while on vacation.

It was meant to be a holiday of reconnection, a chance for three young children to walk the soil of their heritage. Instead, it ended in unspeakable tragedy on the asphalt of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The DeLeon family, visiting from the United States, is today mourning the loss of three siblings—Emmanuel, Kairu, and Njeri—killed in a grisly road accident.
The crash, which occurred on January 4, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the diaspora community. Emmanuel (13) and little Kairu (6) died at the scene. Their older sister, Njeri (16), fought for her life in hospital but succumbed to her injuries days later, leaving parents Leah and Christopher DeLeon with a silence where there should have been laughter.
In the face of this devastation, the Kenyan spirit of harambee has risen. An online fundraiser has already collected over Sh8.6 million ($66,000) to help the family repatriate the bodies to Waterloo, Iowa. But money cannot heal the hole left in the hearts of two continents.
Back in Iowa, classmates remember Emmanuel as a cheerful middle-schooler and Kairu as a bundle of joy. In Kenya, they are now statistics in a national carnage that refuses to end. We mourn with the DeLeons, but we must also demand better. Our roads should lead us home, not to the grave.
