Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu has downplayed rumors of ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna defecting to the newly formed Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

The volatile landscape of Kenyan politics continues to shift as Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu publicly addresses mounting speculation surrounding Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna. Rumors have been swirling that Sifuna might jump ship to join the newly formed Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
These political realignments are deeply significant as the nation slowly gears up for the 2027 electoral cycle. A high-profile defection of Sifuna’s caliber would severely weaken ODM while providing the nascent DCP with crucial metropolitan and Western regional clout.
Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday, Senator Nyutu sought to clarify the context of the rumors. He dismissed claims that Sifuna’s defection was an imminent, finalized deal. Instead, Nyutu framed the situation as a strategic political overture, an "olive branch" extended to the vocal ODM leader amid deepening internal rifts within his current party.
“For Sifuna joining DCP, that was just an invite by my party leader. At that time, he was saying that should ODM kick you out, then you are free to come and join our party,” Nyutu stated, emphasizing the fluidity of the political chessboard.
Sifuna’s future within the Orange party has been a subject of intense media scrutiny. Recent strategic disagreements and zoning debates have exposed fractures within the opposition coalition, leaving several key figures evaluating their long-term political survival. Gachagua’s DCP is actively capitalizing on this instability to court dissatisfied leaders.
Nyutu maintained that while the DCP is aggressively promoting itself, the ultimate decision rests squarely with Sifuna. “Minimally, everybody is free to promote their parties and to invite good leaders like Sifuna. Whether he joins DCP will be his decision to make,” he added.
This public courtship underscores the aggressive maneuvering already underway for the next general election. As traditional strongholds show signs of splintering, parties like DCP will continue to exploit zoning disputes and policy disagreements within the established coalitions.
Senator Nyutu has previously warned that ODM’s push for zoning could alienate their partners and create an avenue for mass defections. As Sifuna faces suspension threats from an increasingly hostile ODM faction, his political trajectory will undoubtedly influence the opposition’s stability heading into 2027.
“The door is open, the terms are clear, but in politics, timing is everything. We wait for the Senator to make his move,” Nyutu concluded.
