Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has moved to tighten the national security grid, officially gazetting the establishment of a new police station in Kiambu and five additional police posts spread across the country’s vast frontiers.

In a Gazette Notice dated January 23, 2026, the IG exercised his powers under Section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act to designate Kamuguga Police Station in Kiambu County as a fully-fledged station. The move is expected to curb the rising cases of burglary and petty crime in the peri-urban area, which has seen rapid population growth in recent years.

Expanding the Dragnet

Beyond Kiambu, the IG’s directive strategically places boots on the ground in underserved and security-sensitive regions. The five newly designated police posts are:

• Otonglo Police Post (Kisumu West): Strengthening security in the lakeside city’s outskirts.
• Mabera Police Post (Kuria West, Migori): Enhancing border security and curbing cross-border cattle rustling.
• Lagbogol Police Post (Wajir West): A critical addition to the counter-terror and public order efforts in the North Eastern region.
• Gataka Police Post (Kajiado North): Addressing the urban sprawl and associated crimes in the Kajiado-Nairobi metropolitan belt.
• Thuura Police Post (Imenti East, Meru): Boosting police visibility in the agriculturally rich central region.

A Strategic Signal

This expansion comes amidst a broader reform agenda within the National Police Service aimed at improving response times and community policing. By upgrading posts to stations and creating new posts, the Service is effectively decentralizing command and bringing law enforcement closer to the mwananchi.

"Security is not just about guns; it is about presence," a security analyst noted. "Placing a post in Lagbogol or Mabera sends a message that the state is present and watching." The new establishments are expected to be operational immediately, with officers deployed to man the desks and patrol the beats.
