“We Cannot Have Criminals Running After Police”: Ruto Vows to Overhaul Security After Attacks on Officers

Ruto Orders Security Overhaul After Targeted Attacks on Police During Protests

Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto has announced sweeping changes to Kenya’s security approach, declaring an end to “business as usual” in the wake of recent protests that saw police officers come under direct attack. Speaking at a high-level meeting with senior security commanders at State House Nairobi on Saturday, the President outlined plans to reinforce police protection and overhaul security protocols nationwide.

“We cannot have a country where criminals run after police officers,” Ruto said, referencing violent incidents that left dozens of police vehicles vandalized and firearms looted. “It is my responsibility as President to make sure that you are safe.”

The President’s remarks come after a turbulent period of civil unrest, during which law enforcement officers faced heightened hostility. In response, Ruto has pledged to equip the police with better resources, review operational strategies, and ensure strict legal consequences for anyone who attacks members of the security forces.

He also praised officers for their courage in maintaining order under immense pressure and called on citizens to stand behind the police as they uphold law and order. “We must restore confidence in our security systems and protect those who protect us,” he added.

Policy analysts interpret the President’s statements as a pivot toward a firmer, more assertive stance on national security—one that prioritizes law enforcement resilience amid growing public dissent. While some have welcomed the renewed focus on officer safety, others caution that reform must be balanced with accountability to avoid exacerbating tensions with the public.
