President William Ruto has arrived in Emurua Dikirr to lead a grieving nation in laying to rest the late MP Johana Ng'eno and his four aides, who tragically perished in a helicopter crash.
The bodies were flown in by military helicopters on Thursday, drawing thousands of emotional residents to pay their last respects to the fiercely vocal legislator.
Ng'eno's sudden demise not only strips the South Rift region of a paramount political figure but also leaves behind a trail of unresolved political intrigue, particularly concerning his ties to ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The Kenyan government has fully assumed responsibility for the funeral arrangements, recognizing the immense national profile of the fallen MP. The fatal AS350 helicopter crash occurred on February 28, 2026, in the Mosop area of Nandi County, claiming the lives of Ng'eno and five others. Following a memorial service in Emurua Dikirr, the bodies of Ng'eno and his close aide Wycliffe Rono were transported to their respective homes for an overnight vigil, strictly adhering to Kipsigis cultural traditions.
The main funeral ceremony is taking place at the Emurua Dikirr Primary School, overseen by a specialized parliamentary committee and Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki eulogized Ng'eno as a "fearless and vocal" advocate for his constituents. Beyond his duties as the chairman of the Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works Committee, Ng'eno was a revered champion of Kalenjin culture.
While thousands mourn the legislator, a heavy cloud of political tension hangs over the proceedings. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who demanded a thorough investigation into the crash citing prior threats to Ng'eno's life, penned an emotional tribute but noticeably confirmed his absence from the burial. The absence underscores a deep rift.
Ng'eno was reportedly a key confidant of Gachagua, holding knowledge of a bugged and highly confidential meeting in a Kisumu hotel in August 2024. The leaked secret tapes from this meeting reportedly catalyzed the urgent push to impeach Gachagua in October 2024. With Ng'eno taking the finer details of that fateful night to his grave, the political landscape of the ruling coalition remains fundamentally altered.
"His untimely demise leaves a significant political vacuum in the South Rift region, silencing a man who held some of the state's most heavily guarded secrets."
