President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja have officially confirmed that the newly upgraded, state-of-the-art 400-bed Mutuini Level 5 Hospital in Dagoretti South will open its doors to the public this April.

The healthcare landscape of Nairobi is set for a massive infrastructural boost. Following an extensive inspection tour on Monday, the top echelons of national and county leadership announced the imminent operationalization of the vastly expanded Mutuini Hospital.

This development is a cornerstone of the KSh80 billion "Ruto-Sakaja pact" aimed at transforming the capital. For the millions of residents in Nairobi's densely populated western suburbs, this facility represents a monumental shift from struggling local clinics to accessible, world-class medical care under the new Social Health Authority (SHA) framework.

A Tenfold Expansion in Capacity

The transformation of the Mutuini facility is staggering. What was once a modest 40-bed sub-county facility has been radically expanded into a comprehensive 400-bed Level 5 referral hospital. The new complex boasts an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), greatly expanded outpatient services, and specialized clinics tailored to manage complex medical conditions.

President Ruto, during the commissioning tour, revealed that the national government is injecting KES 400 million (approx. $3 million) strictly for modern medical equipment to guarantee the hospital is fully functional on day one. Crucially, the President reiterated that all patients registered under the national Social Health Authority will access these premium services entirely free of charge, effectively decongesting the heavily burdened Kenyatta National Hospital.

The Blueprint for Urban Transformation

Governor Sakaja highlighted the project as a prime example of successful intergovernmental cooperation, stressing that Nairobi must rapidly elevate its infrastructure to match its status as a global hub.
