Construction of the Talanta Sports City Stadium reaches 85% completion, prompting the government to invite CAF inspectors early as Kenya races to cement its readiness for AFCON 2027.

The hum of machinery at the Talanta Sports City is the sound of a promise being kept. With the skepticism that often shadows Kenyan infrastructure projects, the government has pulled a surprise: The 60,000-seater stadium is 85% complete, well ahead of the critical inspection by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya, beaming during a site tour, announced that the government is not just waiting for CAF; they are inviting them early. A high-level delegation is expected next month to validate the works, a confident move that signals Kenya’s readiness to co-host the AFCON 2027 showpiece with Uganda and Tanzania.
"The contractor is working round the clock," Mvurya stated, his voice echoing in the vast, nearly-finished bowl of the stadium. "We are finishing the external works and training facilities by the end of February. We want CAF to come and see not just a plan, but a reality."
The project, overseen by the Ministry of Defence, has avoided the stalling that plagued previous stadia. The "whole-of-government" approach has seen resources pooled to ensure the structure meets the rigorous FIFA and CAF standards, from pitch drainage to fan safety protocols.
Beyond the tournament, the Talanta Stadium is poised to be a legacy asset. It is designed to host world-class concerts and athletics, positioning Nairobi as a regional sports tourism hub. The renovation of Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums is also running concurrently, ensuring a surplus of match-ready venues.
As the concrete cures and the seats are bolted down, the excitement is building. Kenya missed out on hosting in 1996 and 2018; this time, the government is determined to ensure that the whistle blows in Nairobi in 2027, marking a new chapter in the nation's sporting history.
