Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has issued a stern warning to political leaders and citizens across the country, urging them to champion peace and warning that the government will not tolerate any form of violence or political intimidation ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The political climate in Kenya is already beginning to simmer, long before the first ballot of the 2027 General Election is cast. Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has stepped forward to draw a firm line in the sand regarding national stability.
Omollo’s recent declarations underscore a critical reality: the socioeconomic cost of electoral violence is a burden the Kenyan economy can no longer bear. With the 2027 polls approaching, ensuring absolute peace is not just a political necessity; it is an economic imperative that will define the nation's trajectory.
During a high-level security briefing in Nairobi, PS Omollo reiterated the Ministry of Interior’s uncompromising position on public order. He noted that early signs of political intolerance, particularly in deeply contested regional strongholds, are being closely monitored by intelligence agencies. The PS called upon leaders across the political divide to take personal responsibility in calming tensions rather than stoking the flames of division.
Kenya has a well-documented history of electoral cycles disrupting economic activities, deterring foreign direct investment, and causing severe destruction of property. To prevent a recurrence, the security apparatus is undergoing advanced riot-control training and deploying enhanced intelligence-gathering mechanisms in identified hotspots across all 47 counties.
The specter of violence poses a direct threat to Kenya’s fragile economic recovery. Investors closely monitor the political temperatures, and any indication of instability typically results in capital flight. Furthermore, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the economy, are usually the first casualties of political unrest.
To preempt any orchestrated violence, the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are enhancing their cybercrime divisions to track and prosecute individuals spreading hate speech online. Social media platforms have previously been weaponized to spread misinformation and incite communities.
Omollo emphasized that the law will apply equally, regardless of an individual’s political affiliation or societal standing. The government is also reviving community policing frameworks, like the Nyumba Kumi initiative, to foster grassroots intelligence sharing and promote communal harmony.
As political realignments take shape—with new coalitions forming and old alliances breaking down—the rhetoric is expected to escalate. The responsibility, however, rests heavily on the political elite to guide their supporters responsibly.
Civil society organizations and religious leaders are also being roped into the peace-building process, tasked with conducting civic education on the importance of peaceful democratic participation. The ultimate goal is to decouple the democratic exercise of voting from the existential threat of violence.
“We must normalize losing and winning in elections without burning down the country. The 2027 elections must be decided by the ballot, not the bullet or the stone,” Omollo firmly concluded.
