President William Ruto has set up a new technical committee to reform Kenya’s sports sector, bringing together government, Football Federation and private investors to improve funding, management and opportunities for athletes.
Nairobi, Kenya — 2025-09-04 20:00 EAT. President William Ruto has unveiled a technical committee to reform Kenya’s sports sector, boost investment, and professionalize management ahead of major continental tournaments.
Announced Thursday at State House, the committee brings together government officials, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leaders, and private investors to coordinate sponsorships, oversee broadcasting rights, and strengthen sports governance. The initiative is underway, with initial recommendations expected before CHAN 2024.
Kenyan sports have faced mismanagement scandals, including FKF’s 2022 suspension by FIFA and alleged misuse of Sports Fund resources. Reforms since late 2022 redirected all Sports Fund revenues exclusively to sports development, laying the groundwork for this overhaul.

Mandates: Ministry of Sports, FKF, and private sponsors under the technical committee oversee planning and implementation.
Required steps: Committee to present reform framework within 90 days; parliamentary sports committees to review funding mechanisms.
Government: “We must get sports management right. The problem was leadership, not resources,” said President William Ruto, Nairobi, 2025-09-04.
Deputy President: “The future of Kenyan sports is bright with proper leadership,” said Rigathi Gachagua, Nairobi, 2025-09-04.
Sports Ministry: “We welcome private sponsors under clear partnership terms,” said Ababu Namwamba, Sports CS, 2025-09-04.
Numbers: Kenya hosting CHAN 2024 and co-hosting AFCON 2027; stadium upgrades in Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret underway.
