Police arrest a ringleader of the "42 Brothers" gang linked to the fatal stabbing of a hawker at Kondele roundabout, calming tensions in Kisumu.

Detectives in Kisumu have arrested a prime suspect linked to the brutal stabbing of a hawker at the Kondele roundabout, a breakthrough that police believe will crack open the operations of the notorious "42 Brothers" gang. The arrest follows a week of terror that saw businesses close early and residents stage protests over spiraling insecurity in the lakeside city.
The suspect, identified only by his alias "Ous Kwach," was flushed out of a hideout in the sprawling Nyawita slums in a dawn raid led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He is believed to be the ringleader of a squad that has been terrorizing residents around the Kondele flyover and the Kisumu-Kakamega highway. The victim of the stabbing, Richard Odhiambo, a 49-year-old electronics hawker, was attacked while returning home from work, sparking outrage across the county.
"They don't just rob you; they maim you to send a message," said a boda boda operator who witnessed the arrest. The Kondele roundabout, a bustling economic hub by day, transforms into a "no-go zone" past 9 PM. The "42 Brothers" gang, an offshoot of the older "China Squad," has evolved from petty snatching to organized muggings involving knives and pangas. Intelligence reports suggest the gang recruits teenagers as young as 15, using them as spotters before the "enforcers" strike.
Kisumu County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu confirmed that the suspect was found with a blood-stained jacket and a specialized dagger, which has been sent to the Government Chemist for forensic analysis. "We have the main guy," Anampiu stated at a press briefing. "This arrest is the first domino. We are coming for the financiers and the fences who buy the stolen phones and laptops. Kondele will be safe again."
The stabbing of Richard Odhiambo was the tipping point. His widow, Philister Ogula, described him as a "man of peace" who was killed for less than KSh 2,000 in daily sales. "He refused to let go of his bag, so they stabbed him in the neck," she told reporters, holding a photo of her late husband. Her grief has become a rallying cry for the community, which has accused the police of laxity and complicity.
Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has called for an overhaul of the security leadership in the region, noting that investors are getting jittery. "We cannot build a 24-hour economy when our people are afraid to walk 100 meters to their homes," the Governor said. With "Ous Kwach" behind bars, the DCI now faces the pressure of building a watertight case to ensure he doesn't walk free—a common frustration in a justice system often paralyzed by corruption and lack of evidence. For the residents of Kondele, justice for Richard Odhiambo is non-negotiable.
