The US Department of Defense shifts focus to Homeland Security, warning allies to shoulder their own burdens as it steps back from the global policeman role.

The Pentagon has redrawn the global security map with a new National Defense Strategy that puts "America First" in stark, militaristic terms. In a significant departure from decades of post-WWII doctrine, the US is signaling that its umbrella of protection is shrinking, warning allies in Europe and beyond that future support will be "critical but more limited."
Released this week, the 2026 strategy document explicitly downgrades the threat of China to a secondary tier, replacing it with a laser focus on Homeland Defense. It is a seismic shift that effectively tells NATO partners and other allies: "You are on your own." The era of the United States acting as the world's policeman and primary bankroller is officially over.
The language of the report is blunt. It calls for "hardnosed realism" and demands that allies step up to handle their own conventional defense. The expectation is now for partners to hit a defense spending target of 5% of GDP—a figure that would bankrupt many European welfare states.
For Kenya and the African continent, this retreat to "Fortress America" is a double-edged sword. A US military less obsessed with global projection might mean fewer interventions, but it also means less support for counter-terrorism initiatives like the fight against Al-Shabaab. If Washington is tightening its belt and focusing on the Rio Grande, the security vacuum in the Horn of Africa may widen.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's memorandum argues that past "nation-building" efforts weakened the US military's "warrior ethos." By refocusing on the homeland, the Pentagon is trying to cure itself of imperial overstretch. But in doing so, it risks unraveling the alliance networks that have kept the global peace for 80 years. As the US turns inward, the rest of the world must rapidly learn to defend itself.
