The Democratic Change Party claimed a government plot to divert former deputy president Rigathi 0Gachagua flight and poison him when he returns from the U.S., urging supporters to converge at airports on August
Nairobi, August 15, 2025 — The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has raised alarming claims that senior government officials are orchestrating a plot to abduct and poison former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua upon his return to Kenya on August 21.
DCP Secretary-General Cleophas Malala, citing intelligence briefings, accused Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen of planning:
A diversion of Gachagua’s flight to Mombasa or Kisumu;
The administration of a slow-acting poison in the style of the late Kenneth Matiba.
Malala warned that if any harm comes to Gachagua, the nation would “grind to a halt” and urged supporters to turn up in force at key airports on his return day.
The DCP further accused National Assembly Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committee chair Nelson Koech of planning to reroute Gachagua’s flight. They threatened large-scale demonstrations in the event of any diversion.
Gachagua has a history of such allegations. In October 2024, he claimed two poisoning attempts during his tour of Nyanza, including tampering with his food.
earlier in May 2025, he alleged he was targeted with chemical weapons and a bioweapons squad intended to paralyse him within three months.
So far, neither the government nor the named officials have issued a comment. In previous instances, security agencies dismissed similar claims as sensational and politically motivated.
