Interim leader Oburu Oginga draws a red line for 2027, sparking panic in Mt Kenya East and putting Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on notice.
NAIROBI — The fragile truce holding Kenya’s broad-based government together faces its sternest test yet. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially staked its claim on the Deputy Presidency in the 2027 General Election, issuing a stark ultimatum to President William Ruto: upgrade our partnership or face us at the ballot.
Speaking just two months after the death of party patriarch Raila Odinga, interim party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has discarded diplomatic niceties. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Oburu declared that the opposition outfit—currently enjoying a marriage of convenience with the government—will not settle for "anything less than Number Two" in the next dispensation.
"We have tested the waters with this broad-based arrangement, and the results are clear," Oburu told supporters in Nairobi, referencing the coalition's clean sweep in last month's parliamentary by-elections. "But let no one be mistaken. We are not passengers in this vehicle. Come 2027, ODM must be in the cockpit. We will not negotiate for scraps."
This declaration is not just political posturing; it is a direct threat to the current political order. It places President Ruto in a precarious dilemma: stick with his current deputy, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, and risk losing the massive Nyanza and Coast voting blocs, or embrace ODM and alienate the vote-rich Mt Kenya East region.
The reaction from President Ruto’s stronghold has been swift and venomous. Leaders from Mt Kenya East, who celebrated Kindiki’s ascension to the Deputy Presidency as a correction of historical marginalization, view ODM’s demands as an act of political aggression.
"This seat is not vacant," warned Tigania West MP John Mutunga. "We did not impeach one son of the Mountain only to hand the position to the Lake. If the President entertains this blackmail, he should be ready to calculate his math without us."
For the average Kenyan, this high-stakes poker game is more than just palace intrigue. It signals a potential return to the volatile ethnic coalition building that often precedes election cycles, distracting from urgent economic recovery efforts. With the shilling currently trading at KES 132 against the dollar, business leaders fear that prolonged political uncertainty could spook investors just as the economy shows signs of stabilizing.
Despite the friction, proponents of the alliance argue that a Ruto-ODM ticket would be politically invincible. Analysts point to the "super-majority" the coalition currently commands in Parliament, which has allowed the administration to pass controversial bills with little resistance.
"Ruto is a pragmatist," notes political analyst Herman Manyora. "He knows that without Raila, the ODM base is restive. Oburu is trying to consolidate that base by promising them the second-highest office in the land. If Ruto buys in, they lock up 60% of the country. If he doesn't, ODM walks away, and the government collapses."
As the 2027 clock ticks, the President’s silence is deafening. He must now choose between loyalty to his current deputy and the allure of a guaranteed second term backed by his former rivals.
"We are done being the opposition," Oburu said in his closing remarks, signaling the end of an era. "We are either the government, or we are the government-in-waiting. There is no middle ground."
